Designer clothing has been and always will be the staple of the red carpet- but are vintage and archival pieces the way to stand out amongst the noise of 2024 trends?
Causing A Stir
In recent memory, archival looks have been used by celebrities to pay homage and more significantly score headlines. Even if that is not the central intention, situations like Kim Kardashian wearing several Marilyn Monroe looks for events like the Met Gala cause controversy and arguably take away from any artistic intent of the designer and stylist.
More tasteful interpretations of landmark looks are mostly welcomed by the public, namely Sydney Sweeney’s look at the Vanity Fair Oscars Party this year being the same worn by Angelina Jolie to the Oscars in 2004 (via Marc Bouwer) which was in itself an homage to an outfit donned by Marilyn in the Seven Year Itch.
Vintage Via Vinted
Everyone’s favourite blushing blonde soprano- Sabrina Carpenter spoke in gold tones at her 25th birthday party. The designer, Jared Ellner explained that the quarter-life celebration look was inspired by Kate Hudson’s styling in the romcom How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days. The twist? The dress was originally found on Depop! A clothing resale site in lieu of Vinted, ThreadUp, Poshmark, etc-. After the look dropped, a Depop seller took to TikTok and claimed she got a message asking to ship the dress overnight to New York for none other than Sabrina Carpenter.
The Aspiring Florist
The social media circus following Blake Lively’s promotion of It Ends With Us has come to the consensus that she had a very different idea of what she wants the movie to be. Shifting the focus, at least she’s taking her own (rather tone deaf) words seriously- “grab your friends, wear your florals!” – with her channeling Britney Spear in a one-strap Versace ensemble that Spears herself wore to a Versace 2002 show. The tea-length dress with nude tones and pastel stones definitely caught the light of the camera flash on the red carpet.
