Olympic Champions of the Arab World: Celebrating the 2024 Olympic Medalists

Khelif has been the centre of a lot of scrutiny and controversy regarding her gender and eligibility; yet despite that, persevered through to the final and the gold!

Ahmed Elgendy, Modern Pentathlon – Egypt

Ahmed Elgendy, an Egyptian modern pentathlete, not only brought home the gold, he broke the world record with 1,555 points while doing so. Algendy won the first medal in the Modern Pentathlon for Egypt and Africa, all while having sustained a shoulder injury weeks before the Olympics; Elgendy is unstoppable!

Salwa Eid-Nasser, 400m Sprint – Bahrain

Salwa Eid-Nasser is a Nigerian-born Bahraini sprinter won her country’s silver medal in the 400m sprint, just 0.36 seconds shy of the gold and a new world record. Eid-Nasser is a previous world champion and aims to win her title back for her country.

Kaylia Nemour, Gymnastic – Algeria

Kaylia Nemour, a French-Algerian gymnast won the gold medal in the uneven bars, bringing home the country’s and Africa’s first medal in gymnastics. Not only does Nemour’s time at the olympics showcase the talents of the Arab world, but highlights her strength and perseverance amongst seasoned world champions as an 18-year old olympian. Power to the youth!

Sara Samir, Weightlifting – Egypt

Sara Samir, an Egyptian weightlifter, showed her strength and the strength of her home as she won silver in the women’s weightlifting event. Samir’s win not only shows strength, but growth, as she won a bronze medal in Tokyo 2020. It seems the only way is up for Sara Samir
